An Interesting Perspective to the P versus NP Problem

چکیده

We discuss the P versus NP problem from the perspective of addition operation about polynomial functions. Two contradictory propositions for the addition operation are presented. With the proposition that the sum of k (k ≤ n) polynomial functions on n always yields a polynomial function, we prove that P = NP , considering the maximum clique problem. And with the proposition that the sum of k polynomial functions may yield an exponential function, we prove that P 6= NP by constructing an abstract decision problem. Furthermore, we conclude that P = NP and P 6= NP if and only if the above propositions hold, respectively.

An Attempt to Automate NP-Hardness Reductions via SO∃ Logic

We explore the possibility of automating NP-hardness reductions. We motivate the problem from an artificial intelligence perspective, then propose the use of second-order existential (SO∃) logic as representation language for decision problems. Building upon the theoretical framework of J. Antonio Medina, we explore the possibility of implementing seven syntactic operators. Each operator transf...

The Complexity of Deterministically Observable Finite-Horizon Markov Decision Processes

We consider the complexity of the decision problem for diierent types of partially-observable Markov decision processes (MDPs): given an MDP, does there exist a policy with performance > 0? Lower and upper bounds on the complexity of the decision problems are shown in terms of completeness for NL, P, NP, PSPACE, EXP, NEXP or EXPSPACE, dependent on the type of the Markov decision process. For se...

Luca Trevisan Notes for Lecture 1

Hundreds of interesting and important combinatorial optimization problems are NP-hard, and so it is unlikely that any of them can be solved by a wost-case efficient exact algorithm. Short of proving P = NP, when one deals with an NP-hard problem one must accept a relaxation of one or more of the requirements of having a an optimal algorithm that runs in polynomial time on all inputs. Possible w...

Disjoint NP - Pairs ( Extended

We study the question of whether the class D of disjoint pairs (A,B) of NP-sets contains a complete pair. The question relates to the question of whether optimal proof systems exist, and we relate it to the previously studied question of whether there exists a disjoint pair of NP-sets that is NP-hard. We show under reasonable hypotheses that nonsymmetric disjoint NP-pairs exist, which provides ...

On randomized counting versus randomised decision

We study the question of which counting problems admit f.p.r.a.s., under a structural complexity perspective. Since problems in #P with NP-complete decision version do not admit f.p.r.a.s. (unless NP = RP), we study subclasses of #P, having decision version either in P or in RP. We explore inclusions between these subclasses and we present all possible worlds with respect to NP v.s. RP and RP v...
